Tahiti is the biggest and best known of French Polynesian atolls. The skyline of the island is dominated by high volcanic peaks, accentuated by white sandy beaches, deep green of tropical forests and turquoise blue of the sea.
Prepare to be spellbound by the beauty of sparkling waterfalls, exotic tropical plants and hundreds of bright hibiscus blooms. Tahiti is often called the Island of Love, and once you are here, you’ll see why.
As far as cultural pursuits are concerned, Tahiti is home to the Black Pearl Museum, the Gauguin Museum, the Seashell Museum, Poafai Park, Notre Dame Cathedral, Matavai Harbour and many more places that merit a visit.
'Lovely Moorea never fails to impress you with its mesmerizing, unrivalled beauty. When visiting Lagoonarium, aim for the feeding times (11:30 and 14:00) and see black tip sharks, rays and dozens of fish species flocking into the lagoon, appearing out of nowhere, close enough for you to touch as you snorkel right next to these graceful creatures. Stay overnight to see a fire show which is absolutely gorgeous. Belvedere Lookout with its incredible, awe-striking views, the lush green forests and vertiginously high mountain peak, almost 4,000 feet, is not to be missed.
Thrilling and mysterious, Hauhine is made up of two mountainous islands connected by a narrow isthmus. The coastline is varied and scenic; you’ll see craggy cliffs alternating with white sand beaches as you cruise along the shore on the yacht.
Hauhine is delightfully untouched by the modern age; here you feel lilke you’ve travelled back in time to see what life was like decades ago. There are only eight small villages on the island. The locals are happy to greet guests, and there is no better way to experience Polynesian hospitality than lovely, off-the-beaten-track Hauhine.
There are fantastic horseback trail rides on offer if you want to explore the forested mountains. Local restaraunts are known for their authentic cuisine, live music and captivating shows.
Once a religious and cultural centre, Raiatea is known as the Sacred Island, a place where the spirits of Maori ancestors come to rest in the afterlife. Taputapuatea Marae, the most significant holy place in French Polynesia, is located directly next to the seaside in the east. Here you’ll see ancient stone platforms and learn about famous voyages that emanated from this very site.
Raiatea is the only Polynesian island with a navigable river. Green tree branches make a canopy of leaves above your head; you see wild hibiscus and bamboo groves as you explore this lush, sparsely inhabited island. Here you’ll find Tiare Apetahi, a large fragrant flower resembling an open palm of the hand, growing only in Raiatea.
Tahaa, the Vanilla island, shares the lagoon with Raiatea, the Sacred island, but these islands, despite being so close geographically, are very different in nature and character.
Tahaa is more relaxed and laid back, local residents are busy fishing and growing vanilla on many plantations – hence the island’s nickname. Good quality vanilla pods are a common souvenir taken from the islands for friends and family back home. And then there are coral gardens and pearl farms. Joe Dassin Beach, once owned by the famous French singer, now a pristine, secluded territory, is definitely worth a visit.
Bora Bora, a true gem set in a vast turquoise blue of the Pacific ocean, is your typical idyllic tropical island.
One of the most romantic spots on earth, Bora Bora is known for its fantastic, palmtree fringed beaches, of which Matira in the south of the island is the most famous. You can laze the days away on the powdery white sands or go climb Mount Otemanu to enjoy the incredible views or feed nurse sharks and swim with turtles. There are many great diving spots are outside of Bora Bora lagoon, where you’ll be able to see sting rays, eagle rays and manta rays in addition to barracuda and hundreds of tropical fish.
